Talent Quarter is proud to partner with Tasmania Health to recruit an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist – Mental Health for the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU) at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior clinical role within a 6-bed specialist mental health unit, supporting individuals in acute crisis and helping shape the future of mental health care delivery in Tasmania. About the Role
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will provide advanced clinical leadership and expert mental health nursing care within the MHSSU. Working collaboratively across emergency, inpatient and community settings, you will play a key role in improving outcomes for consumers presenting with complex mental health needs, including dual diagnoses.
You will act as a trusted clinical resource to nursing, medical and allied health teams, while supporting system-wide mental health reform initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver expert mental health nursing care based on best practice and evidence-based frameworks
  • Undertake advanced mental health assessments using specialist tools
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance in complex decision-making scenarios
  • Coordinate safe admissions, transfers and discharges
  • Collaborate closely with Emergency Department, Alcohol & Drug Services and Community Mental Health teams
  • Support implementation of the Rethink Mental Health Plan and Tasmanian Mental Health Reform Program
  • Contribute to education, mentoring and clinical capability development
About You
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
  • High-level clinical expertise in acute mental health nursing, with ideally 5+ years’ postgraduate experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate across multidisciplinary teams
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act 2013, WHS requirements and clinical governance frameworks
  • Confidence working with complex presentations, including comorbid mental health and substance use

Essential
  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as a Registered Nurse
Desirable
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Mental Health / Psychiatric Nursing
  • Extensive psychiatric nursing experience or credentialing with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN)
  • Currently undertaking or willing to undertake relevant tertiary qualifications
