Your Nursing Career, Your Way: A Q&A with Zoe Cooke from Talent Quarter

Thinking about your next nursing role? Whether you’re craving more flexibility, dreaming of a rural adventure, or ready for a permanent position that offers stability, Zoe our Team Lead at Talent Quarter understands exactly what you need

With years of experience supporting nurses across Australia, Zoe has come to understand the pressures you face and the opportunities that can take your career to the next level.

Here’s Zoe’s advice on finding work that fits your lifestyle and how our
Refer a Friend program helps you and your colleagues thrive together.

Zoe, when you speak with nurses, what are the biggest reasons they start looking for a new role?

Most nurses I talk to want better work–life balance, fairer rosters, or the chance to grow their skills in a different clinical setting. For nurses working rural or remote, the need for variety and adventure is huge, they want to experience new communities and still make a real impact.

When I hear that, I try to match them with opportunities that fit those goals, whether that’s flexible shifts close to home or a permanent position. At Talent Quarter we’ve built connections across Australia, so I can explore options that give nurses the flexibility or fresh experience they’re after without them having to navigate it all alone.

What do you hear most often about what Nurses  really want, is it flexibility, culture or something else?

  1. Flexibility comes up first almost every time - nurses want to decide when and where they work so they can actually have some balance between their professional and personal lives.
  2. Culture. You want to feel respected and supported by your team and management.
  3. Career growth is another big driver, especially for anyone looking to build experience across specialties or move into leadership.

Outside of those, I think there are other things that get overlooked that make a big difference like:

  • Predictable rosters so you can plan family time and life outside of work.
  • Access to mentoring and CPD to keep skills growing and careers moving forward.
  • A supportive team that has your back when a shift gets tough – we know this happens all too often.
  • Wellbeing support - from mental-health resources to managers who genuinely listen and care.

When I’m helping someone plan their next role, those extra pieces really guide the conversation. Together we look for roles that tick the boxes on flexibility, culture, and development, but also give you a sense of belonging and the right kind of support so you can thrive in the long run.

From your perspective, what makes a permanent role especially attractive to nurses right now?

Security and consistency are definitely appealing. A permanent role gives you a steady income, benefits, and the chance to really feel part of a team and a community. For some nurses it also opens doors to structured professional development and clearer career pathways into senior or leadership roles.

That said, I know permanent work isn’t for everyone! Shift and agency nursing offer incredible flexibility and variety, and those options are just as valuable. What I try to do here at TQ, is help nurses explore which path fits their goals and lifestyle, whether that’s the stability of a permanent role or the freedom of casual and contract work. It’s about finding the environment where you can grow, feel supported, and deliver the best care, whatever shape that takes for you.

Referrals seem to play a big role in nursing recruitment. Why do they matter so much, and what would you say to a nurse who has a friend or colleague thinking about their next move?

Referrals are huge in nursing because the profession is built on trust. When a nurse recommends TQ, it carries real weight. Many of my favourite success stories began when a nurse joined us through a friend’s recommendation and thrived in a role that truly fit. If you have a colleague thinking about a change, I’d love to chat.

As a thank-you, we’re offering a $500 referral bonus when your friend completes a four-week placement. The bonus is a nice extra, but the real reward is helping someone you care about find a role where they’ll feel supported and valued. That sense of community is what makes nursing special, and it’s the heart of how we work at Talent Quarter, that’s what we mean by #connectionswithimpact.

Beyond filling jobs, how do you help nurses grow their careers, and what advice would you give someone thinking about their next step?

For me, recruitment isn’t just about the next shift - it’s about the long game. At Talent Quarter we offer support that helps nurses build a career, not just find a role, including:

  • CPD platform for career-long learning and compliance.
  • Compliance support to make credentialing smooth and stress-free.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for confidential mental-health and wellbeing support.
  • 24/7 workforce support so there’s always someone to turn to.

My best advice? Be open to new opportunities and take the leap! Every time you step outside your comfort zone you gain skills, confidence, and connections that can move your career forward faster than you expect.

Whether you’re ready for a new role yourself or know a colleague who is, I’d love to have a conversation, sometimes that first chat is all it takes to discover the next great move.

 #connectionswithimpact in Action

When you introduce another nurse to us at TQ, you’re not just helping them find a role that fits their life - you’re strengthening the entire nursing community.

I’m not here just to fill shifts, I see myself as a career partner, not just a recruiter. That means I’m really invested in your journey, I’ll listen to your goals, give you honest advice, and stay in touch well beyond your placement. At TQ, I think our focus on wellbeing, professional development, and community connection is what really sets us apart.

AI in Australian Healthcare: What Nurses Need to Know in 2026
By Chris O July 21, 2026
Everything you need to know about becoming a registered nurse in Australia and what comes next. If you've landed here, chances are you're either getting ready to apply for AHPRA registration or you're already somewhere in the process. First of all, congratulations! Whether you're a new graduate, returning to nursing after a break or moving to Australia from overseas, this is an exciting milestone in your career. We know the registration process can feel a little overwhelming, so we've pulled together this guide to make it as straightforward as possible. And remember, you don't have to wait until your registration comes through before thinking about your next role. That's where we come in. What is AHPRA? The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to regulate Australia's nursing profession. The NMBA sets the registration standards that nurses and midwives must meet, while Ahpra manages the application process and maintains the national register of registered health practitioners. Put simply, if you want to work as a nurse or midwife in Australia, you'll need Ahpra registration. This includes: Registered Nurses (RN) Enrolled Nurses (EN) Midwives Who needs AHPRA registration? You'll need to apply if you're: A new nursing graduate An internationally qualified nurse moving to Australia Returning to nursing after time away from practice Looking to practise as an RN, EN or Midwife in Australia If that sounds like you, you're in the right place. Which registration pathway applies to you? The registration process looks slightly different depending on your circumstances. Australian graduates If you've recently completed an approved Australian nursing or midwifery qualification, you'll apply through Ahpra's graduate registration pathway. Internationally qualified nurses If you've completed your nursing qualification overseas, your application pathway will depend on where you trained, where you've practised and your professional experience. Before applying, you'll generally complete Ahpra's online Self-check, which helps determine the assessment pathway that applies to you. Returning nurses If you've taken time away from nursing, you may need to demonstrate that you meet the NMBA's Recency of Practice requirements before returning to practice. How do I apply? The process is actually more straightforward than most people expect. Step 1 – Create your Ahpra account Visit the Ahpra website and create your online account. This is where you'll: Submit your application Upload supporting documents Track the progress of your registration Step 2 – Gather your documents Before applying, you'll generally need: Proof of identity Passport or driver's licence Nursing qualifications Academic transcripts Employment history English language evidence (where required) Criminal history declaration If you're applying from overseas, Ahpra may request additional documentation depending on your circumstances. Talent Quarter Tip 💙 Create a folder on your computer with all your important documents before you start your application. Not only will it make your Ahpra registration much easier, but you'll already have everything ready when it's time to apply for nursing jobs. Future you will thank you! Step 3 – Meet the registration requirements Every nurse must meet the NMBA's registration standards before registration can be approved. These include: Criminal history requirements English language skills Professional indemnity insurance arrangements Recency of practice Once you're registered, you'll also need to meet ongoing obligations each year, including completing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and renewing your registration annually. The good news? These are standard requirements for every registered nurse, and Ahpra provides clear guidance if any further information is required. Do I need an English language test? Not necessarily. Every applicant must meet the NMBA's English language skills registration standard, but that doesn't automatically mean everyone needs to sit an English language test. Depending on where you completed your education and your professional background, you may already meet the standard through other accepted evidence. Always check the current NMBA requirements before booking an English language test. How much does AHPRA registration cost? Applying for registration involves application and registration fees, which are updated periodically by Ahpra. If you're applying from overseas, you may also have additional costs such as: Identity verification Criminal history checks Certified document copies Qualification verification English language testing (if required) Checking the current fee schedule before you begin can help you budget for the entire process. How long does it take? This is probably one of the questions we're asked most. The honest answer is… it depends. Processing times vary depending on your circumstances, whether you're applying from Australia or overseas and whether all required documents have been submitted correctly. The best thing you can do is submit a complete application from the beginning to help avoid unnecessary delays. It's also worth keeping in mind that processing times may be longer around May each year , as this is when Australia's registered health practitioners renew their annual registration with Ahpra. During this busy period, application volumes are typically higher, which can impact processing times. What happens after I submit my application? Once your application has been lodged, Ahpra will assess your documents and may: Verify your identity Confirm your qualifications Review your employment history Request additional information Finalise your registration Keep an eye on both your Ahpra portal and your email so you can respond promptly if further information is requested. International nurses Australia offers an incredible range of nursing opportunities, from world-class metropolitan hospitals to regional and remote communities where you'll quickly become part of the local team. If you're an internationally qualified nurse, your registration pathway may involve additional assessment steps depending on where you completed your qualifications and your recent professional experience. While every application is different, don't let that discourage you. Thousands of internationally qualified nurses successfully register and begin rewarding careers in Australia every year. While you're waiting... Just because your registration is still being processed doesn't mean your career has to be on hold. In fact, this is the perfect time to: ✔ Update your resume ✔ Decide what type of nursing you'd like to do ✔ Learn about current pay rates ✔ Explore travel nursing opportunities ✔ Research different states and healthcare settings ✔ Start chatting with a recruiter about what's available At Talent Quarter, we're always happy to have an obligation-free conversation, even if your registration hasn't come through yet. One thing many nurses don't realise is that Ahpra registration is only one part of getting job-ready. Depending on the employer, you may also need: National Police Check Working With Children Check NDIS Worker Screening (where applicable) Vaccination and immunisation evidence Professional references Mandatory training Working rights documentation Our team can help you understand exactly what's required for the roles you're interested in, making the onboarding process as smooth as possible.
